Curb Check

Today while 'surfin the net, I ran across the joint "Curb Check" by Ob-One, which was featured on Ob-One's The Soul Season Mixtape. *insert shameless plug* Yours truly, DJ Switch, mixed and layed the cuts down on this one. The Soul Season Mixtape was one the most detailed and intricate mixtapes I have ever had to mix and manipulate. I can remember after being given all of the mixtape tracks, that it took close to 2 weeks to complete the project, due to Ob-One's O.C.D...just kidding man...I remember being up all hours of the night mixing, scratching, and doing juggles for this CD and thinking I was golden. Ob-One would come back to the studio the following morning after hearing the draft and pull a piece of paper out of his pocket with notes and times scribbled on it. With hesitance he would say something like:

"Yo Switch ... uh ... yeah at 2 minutes and 53 seconds, I'm not feelin that one scratch so lets take that out of there and I want to move around these 2 tracks..."

Even though this was frustrating, I learned what kind of producer/emcee Ob-One was. I could tell he had the mindset of: whatever effort and time you put into even the most unimportant and/or unnoticed part of a project, the more satisfaction, recognition, and notoriety will come your way. I guess I can compare it to someone attending church. The more you attend, listen, and learn, the more you get out of it. If you listen to Ob-One's Beats, you can hear that his compositions aren't something he threw together on Fruity Loops in 30 minutes. He's got dusty fingers from GoodWill if you know what I mean plus a good ear for putting together a solid track, lyrics included ...

A music career is not the only venture that has been keeping Ob-One on his grind. He recently launched a clothing line, Group Fly Clothing. Visit the site. The catalog is ill!

A rapper that balls or a 'baller that raps?

I recently had the chance to lend a hand and ear in the studio with Joe Smith while his "Joe The Beast" The Beginning Mixtape was being recorded and produced. If you aren't sure who Joe Smith is, then you probably don't follow basketball much. He is an NBA journeyman who has played for 9 nba squads and was the first round number one pick in The 1995 NBA Draft. Joe currently plays for The Cleveland Cavaliers.

Typically when you hear of an NBA
baller releasing rap singles, the critics, djs, and general public tend to write them off for many good reasons. I can give you an example off the top of my head. How about Gary Payton "Livin Legal and Large" What a joke!...Anyhow...with Joe Smith's mixtape, you are getting nothing but a grade A product, that is fire for the club and the streets. I have personally worked with many indie and mid-level rappers and rock bands, in studios and on stage for nearly a decade and I have never seen anyone on their grind, with such enthusiasm and work ethic like "Joe The Beast." If you were unaware that Joe was a pro basketball player and chopped it up with him in the studio or at a club, you would likely think he was a humble rapper trying to make it in the hip hop world and would do whatever possible to get his music produced, recorded, and heard. I believe Joe Smith is a rapper that plays basketball rather than a basketball player that raps. I give The Beginning Mixtape a 10/10 rating and truly feel as a DJ/producer, that Joe showed more creativity than the original artist's instrumentals he used on the tape, proving himself as a lyricist. My personal favorite, which I have been rinsing out in the club is "Lucifer." With a Bob Marley swagger jacked hook, uptempo beat and reggae/dub vibe, this joint is a perfect club track and will go over well this summer when it gets heard and is in rotation.
Download this mixtape you won't be sorry. If you get a chance, add Joe The Beast's Myspace for updates, future releases, and info on Joe's label, Nova Unit Records.

Hood News OK

Who would have ever thought there would be a specific website devoted 100% to news from the hood...in Oklahoma City that is...

Although I think the hood news Oklahoma website can be a bit political, there is some good info and dirt on it. Such as if you are wanting to find out who got beat down in front of a metro club, they will clear the air on that. What local rapper was recently released from prison? etc...There is a hall of shame and fame from party promoters and even audio clips of some dirty deeds between night club promoters...pretty hood huh...If you are interested in all the hood news in the Oklahoma City metro with first hand accounts...then check out hood news...
